EU Food Rules

Regional workshops on European food legislation for third countries

EU Food Rules

Contract Number 2010 96 10 “EU Food Rules and Food Import Requirements”

Compliance with EU food safety and quality standards may represent a major constraint on the development of exports by third countries to the EU due to the fact that those countries, mainly developing countries, do not have adequate national services, resources, structures and equipment to ensure the control and surveillance of the food production chain.

In certain areas, such as fruit and vegetables and other non-animal food sectors, the control and surveillance of food safety are in the hands of private organisations and importers.

Information and training are strategic tools to help third countries to develop knowledge and capability of meeting EU import requirements and increase trade of safe food.

Objectives:

The aim of this project is to organise training sessions in order to inform third countries, in
particular developing countries among them, about the implications of the EU food safety
standards in the following sectors: fruit and vegetables, fishery & aquaculture products, plant
protection products, food labelling and traceability, residues monitoring plan, animal welfare etc.
A better understanding of the EU policy in these matters and areas of imports will allow the
competent authorities in third countries to better understand the requirements of EU
legislation and ensure improved official controls of products intended for export, thus
avoiding unnecessary burdens and facilitating trade.
