The Hellenic Food Authority (EFET) was established under the Law 2741/28-09-1999. It is a Governmental Organisation, administered by the Ministry of Health and Social Solidarity and is managed by a seven members Management Board. The principal mission of EFET is to take all reasonable steps to ensure that food produced, distributed or marketed into the country are safe and meet the highest standards of hygiene and also to protect consumers' interests. EFET aims to ensure that food complies with legal requirements, or where appropriate with recognised codes of good practice.
EFET as a dynamically developing organisation in terms of responsibilities and standards is the one of the two Central Competent Authorities in Greece in relation to the control of food chain production. It shares the responsibility of official food controls with the Ministry of Rural Development. Since its establishment on 13 January 2000 until today, its Management Board has set the development strategy of the organisation, planning and proceeding to the integration of actions, which were the result of the creation and fulfilment of those conditions that set the organization basis of a modern organization able to respond successfully to its obligations.
EFET is organised at central and regional level. At central level, it consists of six directorates (Food Enterprises Control, Laboratory Control, Appraisal and Licensing, Nutritional Policy and Research, Education, IT and Communication and Administrative Support), a Legal Services Support Office and a Consumer Services Office. The head office is responsible for drafting annual monitoring plans, evaluating their implementation, issuing implementing or clarifying circulars, proposing legislation and more generally shaping the institution's policy.
There are nine Regional Directorates that are organised into four sections (Food Enterprises Control, Laboratory Control, Appraisal Licences and Administrative Support) and a Consumer Services Office. The regional directorates are co-ordinated, directed and supervised by EFET's Central Office, which is responsible for carrying out administrative checks on the directorates. EFET's relationship with other services at both central and regional levels is defined by Act No 2741/1999 and by Joint Ministerial Decrees Β3-32/2003, 052/2004 and 088/2006.
